Spotlight on Jenny Erica by Sarah
An Unseen Skaters special. February 29, 2004.

Jenny Erica, 14 represents the Skating Club of New York and trains in Newark, Delaware, with coaches Jeff DiGregorio and Ron Ludington.  She also trains at rinks in Hackensack, New Jersey, and Chelsea Piers in New York City.  In the 2003-04 season, she won the silver medal in Junior Ladies at North Atlantic Regionals and placed 11th at Eastern Sectionals.

When and how did you begin skating?
When I was five, I started taking group lessons once a week in the winter time.  When I was nine, my love for skating was so immense that I asked my mom if I could have more lessons.

What are your long-terms goals on and off the ice?
My long-term goal on the ice is to make the World and Olympic team.  Off the ice, I would like to finish high school, attend college, study to become a lawyer, and also write books.

Who has had the greatest influence on your skating?
My coach Jeff [DiGregorio] has greatly influenced my skating because he has improved every aspect of my technique and also taught me how to train better.  My mom has also had a big influence on my skating because she devotes her time and energy to helping me do what I love and she makes many sacrifices.  She is always there to support and love me.

Who are your favorite skaters and why?
My favorite skaters are Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen and Kristi Yamaguchi.  They are excellent skaters with positive [work] ethics which inspire me to work hard.

What is your favorite jump, spin and connecting move?
I love to create my own intricate positions in my spins and spiral positions.  Thus, I don't have a favorite jump because I constantly challenge myself to figure out another creative move.  I enjoy practicing all the jumps, spins and connecting moves so they get better.

What do you feel are the weakest and strongest points of your skating?
I feel that one of my strong points is that I am a good competitor.  The weakest part of my skating is my consistency because I have not been working on the triple jumps for long.

What music did you skate to this season?
This season, I skated to "Sleeping Beauty" for my long program and "Libertango" by Bond for my short program.

Describe and evaluate your performaces at Regionals and Sectionals.  What do you think of your performace?
I was happy with my performance at Regionals.  I had a positive attitude and really enjoyed my programs.  I feel I could have skated a little better at Sectionals.  However, I have improved so much this year and I am a different skater from what I was a year ago.  I look forward to improving even more next year.

What are some of your off ice hobbies?
Off the ice, I really enjoy writing and spending time with my family and friends.

Why do you love to skate?
I love to skate because I have so much fun. I will always be a skater since it has become a part of me.
