Spotlight on Kelsey Drewel by

Exclusive to Unseen Skaters. March 1, 2001.
Kelsey Drewel, the 2001 US Novice Ladies Champion, took a few moments to do a short Q&A for Unseen Skaters. Kelsey placed second at the 2001 Eastern Sectional and will skate as a junior at the Triglav Trophy in April.
How did you begin skating?
I began skating when I was eight years old. My friend invited me to her birthday party at an ice skating rink. I took lessons for a while, and liked it, and continued to skate after that.
What are your long-term goals in figure skating?
To win the Olympic gold medal and to tour on Stars On Ice one day.
Will you stay a Novice, or will you take your Junior test this summer?
I have an international in April so I have to move up for that, then after the competition I may stay Junior.
Was it difficult to learn the triple lutz/double toe, and how long did it take you to master it?
Well once I learned my triple lutz, the double toe was easy enough to add to it. It took me maybe two months to learn the triple lutz.
What elements of your skating will you be working on this summer?
I will be working on triple/triple combinations, then working on a triple axle, and then making my programs longer.
Can you describe what competing at and winning Nationals was like?
It was a very exciting experience and I had the time of my life. When I won I was so excited and thrilled that I had won, and I just couldn't believe I had done it.
What do you love about skating that makes you want to continue?
I just have fun with it. I love everything that has to do with skating.
